DJ ICON Live from Breakfast of Champions 2012
January 23, 2012 07:47 PM PST
I have had the honor of playing BOC for the last four years and have even travelled thousands of miles back from NYE gigs so I didn't miss it! It's always an amazing time with all of your friends and local DJ heroes all at the same place at the same time celebrating the new year to the fullest extent. Can't wait for the next one! Thanks, Space Cowboys, for making a gal feel special. - ICON A little more background on this week's special guest... Without a doubt, DJ ICON has become an iconic figure in the U.S. dance music industry and beyond. With a career spanning well over a decade, she has captivated audiences the world over with her signature bass-heavy vocal-infused cross-genre DJ sets consisting of Breaks, Electro House and Dubstep; not to mention her magnetic stage presence, skillful DJ mixes and productions on Illeven Eleven Recordings. It’s no wonder why she’s been dubbed one of the leading ladies of this domain. Starting in 1996 at age 16, ICON diligently rose through the ranks of the San Francisco underground at a time when female DJs and promoters were few. In just a few years, her skills and growing reputation had already landed her numerous residencies in San Francisco, as well as a steady flow of multi-national bookings. ICON has also gained success in radio and television in addition to rocking dancefloors worldwide. Among her accolades are stellar reviews for her productions on Illeven Eleven Recordings, a spot in Shejay’s “Top 100 Female DJs”, being voted one of San Francisco’s best in the Nitevibe “Top 10 DJ Dreamteam” Poll, and also scoring a coveted sponsorship from Pioneer Pro DJ. Throughout her career, ICON has regularly toured throughout the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Europe and Asia at world renowned clubs such as 1015 Folsom and Ruby Skye in San Francisco, Limelight in NYC, Fabric and Matter in London, and Avalon in LA; as well as massive events such as Coachella Music Festival, Ultra Music Festival, Burning Man and Fuel Festival in Singapore. ICON has shared stages with top tier artists such as Underworld, The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, Ladytron, Paul Oakenfold, Adam Freeland, Armand Van Helden, Deekline & Wizard, The Stanton Warriors, The Freestylers, Evil Nine, Elite Force, Uberzone, Bassbin Twins, DJ Icey, DJ Rap, Baby Anne and many more. In addition to performing at events, ICON has also promoted many events in San Francisco and New York City over the years, most recently, her Weapon of Choice monthly featuring the best in local talent alongside internationally known Breakbeat and Electro House talent. This led to her popular Weapon of Choice DJ mix series that has accumulated over 20,000 downloads and thousands of plays on Soundcloud and Mixcloud. She is also an integral member of the first female DJ collective, Sister SF, and the longest running large-scale sound camp at Burning Man, Opulent Temple. For many years, ICON dominated the radio waves with residencies and guest spots on a plethora of successful long-running dance music programs such as Thump Funk on XM, Boombox Mix Sessions on Sirius, Solid State on K-ROCK in NYC; IBreaks in the UK; and a myriad of shows in the San Francisco Bay Area, including House Nation on Wild 94.9 FM, Subsonic on Live 105, Zendada on Energy 92.7, and Future Breaks on KUSF. She has also made her way onto the small screen: In 2001, she was featured as one of twelve up-and-coming American DJs in “Disc Jockey,” a 12-part documentary series that aired on Showtime™ and ShoNext™. In 2004, she was the DJ on the internationally syndicated MTV™ series “The Wade Robson Project,” a dance competition hosted by the self-titled super choreographer. ICON’s production endeavors have proven to be as exciting as her DJ career. Her first release on Illeven Eleven Records “Welcome To My Dancefloor”, a collaboration with Dustin Hulton featuring vocals by Nikki Carabello, had huge support by leading artists in the industry. It charted at #8 and #22 on the Beatport Breakbeat and Electro charts, also getting stellar reviews in Mixmag and Beatport top weekly picks. Her second release, “Wha?”, with studio partner Ground_Control, had equally stellar support and reviews; the Keith Mackenzie & DJ Fixx remix charted at #12 on Beatport. So what’s next for this powerhouse bass princess? More DJ ICON originals and remixes as well as a promising slate of collaborations are in the works, as she continues to make her mark in the worldwide dance music industry. Track List

January 16, 2012 04:45 PM PST
"Breakfast of Champions has been my favorite event to DJ in San Francisco since the first year I was invited to play 4 years ago. I still remember playing Fatboy Slim's 'Talkin' Bout My Baby (under the big bright yellow sun)' to start my set downstairs at Whisper. I was really excited to bring out my favorite new tunes along with a couple from earlier in the year and a first for me in getting to play Myagi's 'Viper' which Rumblemunk and I remixed. I'm really happy with the tracks I played. Some filthy tunes in there for you to enjoy." - Deckard Saturday, January 21st join The Space Cowboys at The End Up in San Francisco for The Show. "Each Halloween I am continually impressed with the amazing energy and time that comes together to pull off the annual Ghost Ship event. This year was of course no exception. I was able to show up early with good friends to enjoy all of the artwork and give praise and thanks to everyone who worked so hard to plan the party. Had a super fun time rocking out to Trav's and Murphstar's sets before taking the Ghost Ship stage. After a few beers I will be honest that I kinda thought that the stage was moving when people starting swinging that giant pirate ship back and forth behind me. Thanks to everyone that rocked out and made another year at Ghost Ship a super awesome one." "P.S. Big ups to the other DJ Lance Rocks who came up to take pictures with me and to the fire marshall who thought I was the only DJ at the party. DJ Space Cowboy strikes again." - Brad Robinson Saturday, January 21st join The Space Cowboys at The End Up in San Francisco for The Show. Visit www.spacecowboys.org for more details! Track List

"Ghost Ship continues to amaze me how some Burning Man crews can come together and throw an absolutely enormous party that still feels like a community event, not to mention the lights, sound, art, DJs, and everyone in costume. It feels to me to be the closest thing to BRC in SF. This year I played with the Pink Mammoth crew in their swanky lair and what a treat it was. Secluded in a back corner it felt like an underground party within a party. They did an amazing job with decor and vibe. It left me little choice but to blow it all out. Enjoy." - rrrus One last reminder, Boys and Girls, that Breakfast of Champions will be returning to Utah Street & Mighty this coming Sunday, January 1st! As always there will be an all-star DJ line-up playing from 6 AM until you cry “uncle” in four different areas of sound:

From Tumor Lounge to Ghostship IV and many a Halloween in between, the Space Cowboys never disappoint. This year's Ghost Ship was no exception as they pulled out all the stops with speaker stacks, art cars, installations and an amazing crowd. I was stoked to be playing on the Funktion One to a room full of costumed revelers. I don't always play house, but when I do it's techlectro. Stay funky my friends! - Murphstar Sunday, January 1st join The Space Cowboys and friends for the 12th Annual Breakfast of Champions at Mighty in San Francisco! Space Cowboys parties are always pretty special for me - maybe its partly that I can call a chunk of the crew good friends, maybe its that the events only attract the absolute creme de la creme of deviant partiers, probably both. There is something really fun about seeing the love that goes into these events and then getting to take part in whatever fashion I can - this was my first Ghost Ship and I certainly hope it won't be my last. I was unfit to travel in august and so I missed burning man this year - a fact that really left me bummed out. Getting a chance to see some of the pieces from the Burn on Treasure Island was a real gift - I was overjoyed to see CHARON and the Dust City Diner, and the Mog sounded better than ever - certainly it was no week in the desert but it was great to feel an attachment to that experience for an evening and hear some stories and battle tales from the playa. It was a great night all round and I had a pretty epic set - I hope you like it. As per usual the majority of it is original music, and I've got to say, a big chunk of it was influenced by my times in San Francisco over the last few years. I love the bay and it's the only city I've found that feels like home even though I've never lived there - mainly thanks to the people and the crews that help make the nightlife there as vibrant and exciting as it is. Thanks to Andrea and all the Cowboys for putting on Ghost Ship - that was a blast. - Myagi Track List

It's always an honor to help throw a party with the Space Cowboys. They are a hard-working, creative, organized, and crazy bunch who just LOVE to get down once everything is all set up. The week before Ghost Ship I volunteered to work on some of the big art, which was a lot of fun because the community around the party is just as fun as the party itself (maybe even more!). Unfortunately I had to leave town for a week, which meant I didn't get to see everything all put together until the night of the event. That night, I entered the hangar and was blown away! What a truly awesome, special thing we get to partake in here in the Bay Area. The art was amazing (from Peter Hudson's CHARON to the hanging, massive viking ship to the interactive puppets). It was a little slice of Burning Man in a 7 hour window. And since I didn't make it to the burn this year, it was just the thing I needed. I chose a set featuring a few classic house tracks to warm up the viking ship dance floor before midnight. The crowd was grooving, and I'm sure you will too. Enjoy! - Trav Track List

November 13, 2011 02:14 PM PST
This week our old pal, Plaza de Funk, is back on The RIPEcast with this live recording of his set from Seismic's After The Love party on September 24th at Mighty in San Francisco. Plaza De Funk has been a staple in the dance community for the past 5 years and it looks like nothing will slow his way to the top of the music world. Since moving to London in '05, he has released award-winning records receiving huge support from the likes of Fatboy Slim, Elite Force, Plump DJs, Rico Tubbs & Black Noise. ‘Got The Funk’ on West Records and ‘Back Home’ EP on Mantra Breaks both received the ‘Sureplayer’ status in DJ Mag, his ‘Do It’ record was licensed on the recent Global Underground mix by the Plump DJs & the track ‘Push ‘n’ Pull' was played several time on Radio 1 by Annie Mac & Annie Nightingale as well as getting ‘Single of the Month’ in IDJ. The Italian doesn’t quite stop there though. In '08 he was nominated for 2 of the categories at the Breakspoll awards; Breakthrough Producer and Breakthrough DJ. Plaza walked away from the ceremony clutching the Best Breakthrough Producer award and hasn’t had the chance to look back since. In the past 2yrs Mr Funk has played clubs & festivals around the world & back again stopping off in Australia, the US, China, Russia, Latvia, Belarus, endless dates across Europe & of course back home in the UK at Glastonbury, Glade, Chew The Fat!, Fabric & Ministry of Sound. Plaza is busier that ever with a barrage of material & remixes to come out on Distinctive, MOFO, Dusted Breaks (Best New Label Breakspoll '10), Rogue Industries & Royal One and some very special dates booked in across Europe. This RIPEcast set is pretty close to the one I played at Ghost Ship last weekend, along with a few other tracks I'm feeling at the moment that I didn't get around to playing during my hour time-slot. I am stoked to to have begun it with the Loot & Plunder remix of Goyte's "Somebody That I Used to Know", a track that feels so emotionally raw and honest that it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, and to also include one of my new original tracks, a disco-house, electro-y thing that I created from some disco loops that Craig O'Neil sent me. - Aaron Pope About Aaron:
“There’s so much great music out there, it’s silly to confine yourself to just one genre. Each crowd deserves its own unique experience, and nobody wants to listen to the same type of sound hour after hour. The challenge is to keep the groove, while continuing to surprise and delight.” Aaron’s DJ sets encompass many styles, including house, indie, breaks, electro; even funky mid-tempo if the occasion demands. Currently living in San Francisco, Aaron has been a professional DJ for twelve years. He has played at almost every venue in San Francisco, for a wide range of promoters. His gigs have taken him to New York, Miami and Chicago, Brazil, the Caribbean and Ibiza, and he was also the one of the first resident DJ’s for the Deep End Camp at Burning Man. Aaron also spends a bit of time in the studio making his own dance tracks, and many of his original works can be found on Beatport and iTunes. More of his DJ sets can be found on the Cowboys Podomatic stream, and also here (http://grantkaye.com/aaronpope/podcast.xml). Track List:

This week The Space Cowboys are pleased to bring you this live recording of RIPEcast creator/producer, Zach Moore, from the Funktion One Room at Ghost Ship IV: The Afterlife. "I've been lucky enough to play all four Ghost Ship parties and it has been so much fun watching the production grow every year since it began in 2008.....I love how the event has become a showcase for local artists and DJs and that we've sold out all but one of the four Ghost Ship parties with all local DJ line-ups (2009 was the only year we featured a headliner and it sold out that year too!). I think that speaks volumes about the thriving dance scene we are all cultivating here in San Francisco and I'm so proud to be a part of it......Thank you to Andrea Lundquist (Ghost Ship is her brainchild) for the tireless and truly amazing work she has done over the last 3+ years to make Ghost Ship an annual rite in the San Francisco dance community. Thanks to Robbie Kowal and Sunset Promotions for all of their support on the event since 2009. Thank you to all the people who volunteered their time to make the party happen again this year. And finally my humble thanks to The Space Cowboys for letting me play my small role in such a wonderful event." - Zach Moore Track List

He was 1/2 responsible for a debaucherous monthly called Bikini Wax at the venue formerly known as Sublouge. He's played in stores while you've shopped, in restaurants while you dined, and at wineries while you've sipped chardonay. He's played in homes, on rooftops and radios, in far-away castles and warehouses, under freeways and underground. 8Ball is also the official voice of Space Cowboys, and responsible for such rants as "Hipster Fixie Vamps", "How to Survive New Year's", "Seemed Like a Good Idea At the Time", and others. Martha is for Lovers: Inspired by BurningMan 2011 This mix was conceived on Martha, like many things. If you don't know Martha, don't worry she still loves you. You see, she once was a minivan, before mutating into one of the best seats on the Playa. Martha, like all Space Cowboys, wears many hats. Need a place to rest your aching feet? Martha's got you covered. Need a ride to the party? Martha's got you covered. Want a place to put your stuff? Martha's got you covered. Need to get your stuff somewhere? Martha's got you covered. Need a nap? Martha's got you covered. And sometimes.....Martha is for Lovers. I'd like to dedicate this mix to all of the Marthas out there. Those that help with all of the setup and teardown, the people who donate their speakers, gear, expertise, and, most of all, their time. Committing to long hours with no pay is what it takes to make the best sh*t happen. I have been exceedingly blessed by your support and it's time you got the recognition you deserve. Thank You, you know who you are. - Erik_Hz Track List

Since my last visit to San Francisco for Breakfast of Champions in 2009, I’ve been on tour in Australia, playing all over Europe and this summer was at TEN incredible UK festivals, Glastonbury ‘Rabbit Hole’ being the highlight of 2011. This mix is brimming with my signature funk-heavy, rollin’ beats and party swagger. There’s some amazing toons out there and I have trawled the world to find some breakbeat that still hits the mark. I love all styles of music but the crazy rhythms and technology, laced with a nod to the old school will always get me hyped. I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I did putting it together and feedback is always appreciated. You can check out/download more mixes on my SoundCloud page. MASSIVE respect and love to all the Space Cowboys, the San Fran crew, and to my main man Mr. Zach Moore & The RIPEcast project for keepin' it real and supporting the Finger Lickin’ mission. So with the end of the world booked in for 2012, my debut at Burning Man is 100% firmed up! Deckard - Party People 4: Pool Party Edition. I've been collecting a lot of funky, sunnier tracks this year. The sound is part lounge, funk, hip-hop, mashup, and even a taste of the 80s. When I started putting these tracks together for a mix I kept getting images of a pool party San Francisco style. Reminds me of sunny day parties I'd like to be at. I hope you enjoy this departure in sound for the Party People series. - Deckard Ghost Ship IV: The Afterlife is Saturday, October 29th on Treasure Island. At long last our very own, Shissla, is making his eagerly-anticipated and long-overdue RIPEcast debut! This is a live recoring of Jim's set from Two Crews One Cup at Public Works last month. For the past 15 years, the Space Cowboys have been ‘shaking your business’ on the playa and this year will be no different. We’ve made a few changes this year, like throwing a big day-time event at our Ranch & Saloon (4:45 & Esplanade) on Wednesday; and the UNIMOG has been upgraded yet again, now with 8 21” subs, additional lighting effects and a completely new electrical system! But other things will be the same, like love from Martha and some of the best tunes to be found in the dust! As you're approaching the playa, tune into 93.7 FM to listen to The RIPEcast on KMOG. We will be RIPEcastin' from The UNIMOG all week long, so at any point during the morning, afternoon or night tune into 93.7 FM to pick up the KMOG signal!

August 15, 2011 10:21 AM PDT
We're very excited to be featuring an exclusive RIPEcast this week from NuFunk/House producer Tom Drummond of Perth, Australia. Tom forever endeared himself to The Space Cowboys last year with a track he co-produced with Slynk called 'Cow Bwoy Break' (http://bit.ly/cow-bwoy-break). Since the release of that track Tom and The Cowboys have become pen pals, and at our request, Tom was kind enough to put together this funky and eclectic NuFunk/Hip Hop/Breakbeat/Drum 'n Bass mix for The RIPEcast. Enjoy Boys and Girls! A little more background on this week's guest...
As a producer, Drummond's tracks have been picked up for digital, vinyl and CD release by underground funky-house and breaks labels such as Good Groove, Bombstrikes and Cold Busted and have been played by the likes of Krafty Kuts, A Skillz and Featurecast. As a DJ, his live sets are rarely restricted to any one genre. Hip hop, funk, breaks, drum n bass, dubstep and house music are all thrown into the mix as long as those tracks fit the criteria: "funky, good-time, party beats that will put a smile on your face". August 09, 2011 10:22 AM PDT
The Space Cowboys welcome Chicago transplant, JonBoy [Dubalicious/SWAG], to the The RIPEcast this week. Jonboy is a resident at one of the longest-running monthlies in San Francisco, Freeform vs. Dubalicious (every second Saturday at Shine). He has also made a name for himself running the well-known Stillman space in downtown San Francisco and as a member of the underground crew they call SWAG. For his appearance on the RIPEcast this week, JonBoy has thrown together this eclectic mix of electro, indie dance, techno and house. Enjoy! A little more background on this week's guest (from Jonboy's SoundCloud profile)...
While attending college in Boston, Jon started listening to big beat electronica such as the Chemical Brothers, the Prodigy and Fatboy Slim. In addition, seeing live performances by the superstar DJs of the mid to late 90s at Karma and Crobar in Chicago, is what inspired him to purchase his own decks in 1999 and take in electronic music to its fullest extent. In the summer of 2001, he relocated to San Francisco where he was exposed to the funky overtones of West Coast house. Jonboy eventually warmed up to the chunkier beats and nows plays a hybrid of electro, techno, house, and breaks that he continues to shape today. Jonboy is currently throwing the Freeform v Dubalicious parties on second Saturdays at Shine, in addition to being a resident of the fantastic underground slammers SWAG. He is known to throw the occassional underground party by himself under the Dubalicious moniker. Jonboy has also been running the notorious Stillman space in downtown SF. In the summer of 2010, he performed at Burning Man with the legendary Opulent Temple crew and continues to work with them throughout 2011. Track List

We admit to being a little late to the Pumpkin party having just heard him for the first time at Lightening in Bottle this year, but Nicholas has been dazzling dance crowds in his native Los Angeles and at events like L.I.B. for years. "Electrorganic mood music for romance and espionage", "Lovesauce", "Bouncy Lovehop" and "Folktronica"; Pumpkin's style is truly unique and defies any conventional description. And after experiencing his mesmerizing set on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon under the billowing ribbons of the Woogie stage, Zach Moore returned from L.I.B. determined to book the talented Mr. Alvarado for a RIPEcast. Lucky for us, he was well up for it! If you live in San Francisco you'll have two opportunities in the coming weeks to catch Pumpkin live. The first is this coming Friday, August 5th at the Rickshaw Stop. For more information on that event visit http://on.fb.me/pumpkin-rickshaw. The second is Friday, August 12th at Public Works. The respected and highly-esteemed, Bush Doctors, a.k.a Jem Panufnik and Rennie Pilgrem, are this week's guests on The RIPEcast. Our good pal, Jem Panufnik (a.k.a Jem Stone), is a true renaissance man: an accomplished Dj and producer, the co-founder of the world famous Fingerlickin' label and a talented illustrator (Fingerlickin is appreciated almost as much for Jem's artwork as for the label's cutting edge sound). As if all that weren't enough, Jem has recently added film and animation to his ever-growing list of artistic accomplishments. Oh, and that clever interpretation of The UNIMOG that we've been using as the artwork for The RIPEcast all year long, yeah, we have Jem to thank for that too.... Rennie Pilgrem is equally accomplished in the world of dance music. Himself the founder of a hugely successful dance label, Thursday Club Recordings (now in its 18th year), Rennie is also credited for inventing the sound we know today as Nu-Skool Breaks. As you'll soon appreciate from their RIPEcast, Rennie and Jem as Bush Doctors are a truly unique concoction of funk, disco, house, breaks and a little black magic or "Voodoo Funk" as they like to call it. Enjoy Boys and Girls! A little background on this week's guest.....
Once in SF, Rob quickly became an integral part of Pink Mammoth's foundation. Over the last six years Rob has DJed every Pink Mammoth event in venues all over SF, as well as parties throughout North America, including Los Angeles, New York, Denver and Calgary. In addition to playing headlining sets, Rob has had the opportunity to share the decks with Lee Burridge, Marques Wyatt, Collette, Jimpster, Spirit Catcher, Justin Martin, Random Soul, Hed Kandi, Miguel Migs, AstroGlyde and DJ T. Although rooted in funky and deep house, Rob’s sound is not easily defined. Whether playing an uplifting daytime party, epic sunset/sunrise set, or a peak time nightclub slot, his main source of inspiration comes from the dancefloor. Rather than sticking to a plan or sub-genre of house, Rob's sets are based on reading the crowd and creating an irresistible vibe and unforgettable experience. Arrow Chrome [Disorient] on The RIPEcast
June 28, 2011 08:05 AM PDT
This week on The RIPEcast the Cowboys are pleased to welcome our pal, Arrow Chrome, from the Disorient Burning Man collective in New York City. Arrow's RIPEcast, entitled "The Land of Eroticism", is 60 minutes of bouncy electro house that is sure to get you moving. By the way, if you're headed to Burning Man this year, you can find Arrow and the Disorient crew on the corner of 2:00 & Esplanade. Finally, congratulations from The Space Cowboys to Arrow and his wife, Teagan, on the birth of the third daughter, Tria Soleil, just last week (June 23rd). Enjoy the mix Boys and Girls! Track List
A little background on this week's guest....
During the 90s Chrome constantly sought to combine his fervor for activism and his love of music. This often meant street parties (Reclaim the Streets!), benefit shows, and finally the co-founding of NYCs longest running pirate radio station, Steal This Radio. Steal This Radio, broadcasting 7 nights a week for 3 years in lower Manhattan, provided the backdrop for the next level of Chrome’s evolution as a DJ. At STR Chrome was exposed to the masters of NY Drum-n-bass (I.E. Dara, Soulslinger, Odi, etc.) which became the influences for his next musical passion; Drum-n-bass. STR was also the boiling cauldron that produced NYCs most infamous underground party crew… the Blackkat Collective, of which Chrome was a core member. As a main organizer and DJ of Blackkat, with a steady regimen of club gigs, political fundraisers, and warehouse parties, Chrome began to have the experience and following that it takes to leading DJ in New York City’s crowded market. With Blackkat, Arrow (who was also a fire-eater) and company exploded the rave culture by combining circus performances, art installations, carnival rides, political information and even pyrotechnics with a mixed musical style main floor to create a more collaborative and rounded approach to the underground party scene that was used to “cookie cutter” raves with the same laser and smoke machines at every event. Blackkat’s warehouse parties began to get more and more popular, and their annual Mayday celebration was consistently attracting several thousand people. Chrome’s rise in popularity brought him to play along side such world famous DJs as Lenny Dee, Carlos Soulslinger, Richie Hawten, Frankie Bones, Cool DJ Red Alert and recently the founding father of DJ culture himself Africa Bambatta. By the winter of 2001/2002 Blackkat was throwing the biggest warehouse parties in the city, which were said to be “some of the most amazing parties NYC has ever seen” by NYCs authoritative nightlife magazine, Flyer NYC. (Flyer Magazine, January 2002) Chrome and the Blackkat Crew have also been the subject of articles in Mixer Magazine, Time Out NY, the Village Voice, and College Music Journal. During the Blackkat years Arrow helped to discover and establish the Lunatarium and worked to support Complacent, (which later became the Danger), with whom he helped to plan First Warm Night, and various other street and subway parties around the city. After 911, Arrow made his environmental activism into a full time job by forming the non-profit organization, Biotour.org. With Biotour.org, Arrow Chrome took his DJing on the road, traveling in a vegetable oil powered bus and djing through a solar-powered sound system. Biotour.org featured several national tours with environmental lectures and workshops in the day and sustainably-powered dance parties by night, which exposed Arrow to DJing for communities and events all across the United States. After playing at their events for years, Arrow Chrome became an active member of Disorient in 2005. He helped to build, play and operate the mobile sound unit known as the Disorient Express at the 2005 Burning Man Festival. In addition to his yearly pilgrimages to play at Burning Man, Arrow plays and helps to organize many Disorient and Burning Man related parties around NYC each year, including the NYC Compressor, Kostume Kult parties, Danger parties, and Winkle and Balktick productions to name a few. He is also the founder of two wildly popular annual “burner” boat parties; Bioluminescence and Boom Boat. Internationally, Arrow Chrome has also played events in Puerto Rico, Germany, France, Spain, Vienna, and Czechoslovakia. In addition to being a DJ, Arrow continues to be an active promoter of environmental sustainability, with a particular focus on biodiesel fuel, and is a dedicated husband and father of 3 beautiful girls. June 12, 2011 09:09 AM PDT
We've been long overdue for a RIPEcast from one of our all-time favorite Burning Man camps, the legendary Pink Mammoth. On the 1s and 2s this week is Pink Mammoth resident, JDubYa (a.k.a. Jonathan Will), dropping an array of uplifting house grooves to remind us all that summer has arrived and Burning Man is only just around the corner. "For this RIPEcast mix I wanted to create a sound that reflected the summer vibe", says JDubYa, "a time where extremes can not only exist side by side, they are encouraged, even celebrated, for giving to the whole experience- like high-energy nights mixed with moments of beach-side recovery; driving bass-lines are laced with snippets of smooth nostalgic vocals, horns or keys... new tech is injected with hard ol' funk, then put in a blender, mixed and served up cool with a sultry cayenne twist. We hope you savor this laid-back, spicy juxtaposition of new and old-school summer-inspired sounds. May your summer have the best of all previous summers, and yet unlike anything ever before. Enjoy!" You can catch JDubYa and the rest of the Pink Mammoth crew this coming Saturday, June 18th at Mighty in San Francisco for their official camp fundraiser. Our very own, Zach Moore, is also on the bill to help Pink Mammoth get back to the playa this year. Discounted pre-sale tickets are available right now at http://pinkmammoth.eventbrite.com. Any friend of Plaza de Funk's is a friend of ours! This week The Space Cowboys are pleased to welcome to The RIPEcast PDF's good pal and flat mate, the founder of FlatOut Records and the pride of Stockholm: Peo de PItte (a.k.a. Haggstrom). For his appearance on the show, Peo treats us to sixty minutes of his signature "big room beats and cutting edge synths", a tech-funk mix with plenty of attitude. Peo's RIPEcast is a mere sampling of what you'll be hearing at Burning Man this year by the way. He'll be making his first ever trip to the Black Rock Desert adding to what is promising to be an impressive roster of international DJ talent on the playa this year. Keep on eye on Peo's Facebook fan page and website (www.peodepitte.com) for his Burning Man gigs. Many thanks to Peo de Pitte from The Cowboys for this fantastic RIPEcast. Enjoy Cowpokes! A little more background on this week's guest.....
His trademark combination of big room beats and cutting edge synth’s has resulted in making Peo one of the most exciting new producers to emerge since IKEA. With remixes and releases on labels such as Global Underground, SIMMA, Fingerlickin’, LOT49, U&A, Frenetic and Champion Records, it is no surprise that he has won huge support from some of the dance worlds biggest acts like Afrojack, Crookers, Groove Armada, MJ Cole, Sinden, Roger Sanchez, Laidback Luke, Treasure Fingers, Kissy Sell Out, Elite Force, Jaymo & Andy George and Lee Mortimer. In-turn, this lead Peo to be invited to perform exclusive mixes for Annie Nightingale on Radio1 and Loose Cannons on Kiss FM as well as various radio stations worldwide. In the year’s Peo has been on these shores, he has not had time to stop, unless of course, his studio surrounds him. He has toured Australia playing to full capacity venues, slammed shows in all around Europe and endless clubs in the UK such as Fabric, The Egg and Ministry of Sound and he also dropped a very special VIP set at Global Gathering. Men want to be him, woman can’t help but dance to him and DJ’s & producers are literally queuing up to work with him. Welcome to the world of Peo de Pitte. Track List

May 23, 2011 10:33 PM PDT
Few artists have made a greater, more lasting impression on dance music than has the venerable Rennie Pilgrem. In the mid 90s, Rennie all but invented the sound that we know today as Nu Skool breaks (in fact he even coined the term 'nu skool breaks'). He is the founder of one of the most respected labels in the business, Thursday Club Recordings, now in its 18th year. He is one half of the celebrated NuFunk project known as The Bush Doctors with Fingerlickin co-founder, Jem Panufnik. And he is the man behind the acclaimed "Street Legal" series, Rennie's homage to 1970s funk. Those are just a few highlights from a long list of accomplishments in a twenty-one year career that has made Rennie a luminary of the international scene. For his appearance on the RIPEcast this week, Rennie gives us a sampling of the newest sound emerging from the London underground. Some call it "Nu Jungle", others refer to it as "Jungle Breaks" or "140". Rennie admits he's not sure what to call it exactly but says, "Think of old school rave, early Jungle, future sounds with the speed of Dub Step and you are close." Enjoy this genre-bending trip with one of the great pioneers in dance music, Boys and Girls! Track List
A little more background on Rennie Pilgrem..... Son of a jazz trumpeter, Rennie started life playing tenor saxophone and sitting with his Father’s various bands around Southern England. Later after getting heavily into ‘black’ music he formed various funk bands playing sax and keyboards. Rennie's musical infatuation took a big twist when he heard the sounds coming out of Detroit in the late ‘80s. After making rudimentary House music on the wrong kind of drum machines with soon to be Rhythm Section members Ellis Dee, Richard Thake and Nick ‘Newton Scott, they had interest from (amongst others) the new British house label Guerrilla. Preferring to release their own material they formed Rhythm Section Recordings and became part of the wave of breakbeat house that went on to become known as Hardcore in the early ‘90’s. Their third release ‘Comin’ On Strong’ was a anthem and would have charted top 40 if they’d known about ‘bar codes’ on records. With Ellis Dee the crowned king of rave Djs, Rhythm Section played at pretty much every main party between ’90-92’. On the same bill as The Prodigy, Moby, Altern 8, Shades Of Rhythm and Bizzare Inc. Their music was very big with pretty much every major DJ at the time, Fabio, Grooverider, Ray Keith, Carl Cox etc etc As the drugs sped up, so did the music. When the bpms reached a ridiculous 150, Rhythm Section decided to call it a day and separately went back to making music at House tempo. In 1993 Rennie founded Thursday Club Recordings (TCR) as a medium for putting out his own material. His first few releases were funky house with a smattering of breaks lurking in the background. Recording now as ‘Thursday Club’ he had a big tune with ‘Thursday Theme’ which was chased by Virgin. A chance PA in Florida was another turning point in 1994. Hearing a thriving breaks scene at its original tempo galvanized Rennie into going back to pure breaks. 'A Place Called Acid' (1995) was one of the biggest breakbeat tunes around. With his pedigree as a member of the legendary Rhythm Section in the rave days Rennie's remixing skills are much in demand. He also set up 'Friction' with Adam Freeland, Tayo and Ian Williams which pretty much kick-started the whole 'Nu Skool' scene. He also coined the term 'Nu Skool' along with his fellow Friction partners as a way of describing their music. He's released records on Whole9yards, City Of Angels, Chrysalis/EMI, Mob and China Records to name but a few. He's collaborated with many top producers including legend Arthur Baker (on 'Like No Other', 'Hey Funky People' and ‘Face It’), BLIM (on that massive 'Eskimo' track and the equally huge ‘2Freaks’) and with Meat Katie (on 'Rubba' and 'Atmosphere'). Following on from the huge ‘Black Widow’, Rennie also decided it was time to go back into the studio with Uberzone and their follow-up ‘Cous Cous’ received support from the likes of everyone from the Plump DJ’s to Pete Tong and Sasha! He continues to DJ all over the world and wow audiences with his dancefloor-friendly funk-infused breaks. ***For bookings contact agency@rocstar.com*** For more information on Rennie visit:

A very special thanks to our friends Melyss and Big Fat Frog of Homebreakin' for making Mr. Dauncey's RIPEcast appearance possible. And now a few words from Neighbour on this week's RIPEcast.... "Hello Space Cowboy-ites, Bay Area freaks, boogie lovers, and worldwide friends of West Coast-style dance pressure! This is a 120-min mix of electric-boogie-80s-boompty-house-german-afro-deep business that's been working for me at gigs through the winter, all through Brazil (twice this year!) and at festivals throughout Canada and the States. It's not what people might expect upon listening to my output on Homebreakin, Funkweapons and Jalapeno, but it's a wide musical world and this is just what came out of me at this point in time. Hope to catch you all at a gig sooner or later, either yours or mine!" - Neighbour Check out Neighbour's hot summer EP, "Toute Freak", on Homebreakin Records with remixes from DCUP and Bumper: http://bit.ly/toute-freak. A little more background on Neighbour...
His hybrid DJ-live performance tore across the continent this year, culminating in an incredible series of festival dates across western Canada, including headlining slots at Shambhala 2009, Soundwave, Bass Coast Project, Astral Harvest, and Summer Break. In addition to playing almost 100% original production and remixes, Neighbour plays live synthesizer and electric guitar alongside his legendary DJ sets, which range from no-nonsense electric funk bangers to gorgeous technicolor remixes of classic garage, disco, and house music. Not one to be pigeonholed, Neighbour has spent the better part of the last two years collaborating with everyone in sight. Upcoming dancehall tracks with Calgary’s Ouda Ouda, boogie-raps with fellow performer MC ThinkTank, and an unbelieveable slate of remixes and original releases guarantee that as soon as you think you know that “Neighbour Sound”, it has grown into something completely different. Some people say that dance music isn’t as fun as it used to be; then again, some people haven’t seen a grown man in a unitard shoot lazers out of his guitar far away into the night sky. This week on The RIPEcast, Zach Moore's set as recorded live from Yuri's Night at The California Academy of Sciences with The Space Cowboys. A few words from Zach on his Yuri's Night experience.... Yuri's Night at The Academy of Sciences has always been one of my favorite events to play as a Space Cowboy. Our friends, both new and old, come out in full force for the evening. The Unimog makes a special cameo appearance and the dance floor is always fun and lively. I had the good fortune of playing the closing set to an enthusiastic crowd at the end of the night and I think the energy from the dance floor really comes through in this recording. I was pretty pleased with how it came out. I had a lot of fun getting into the sprit of Yuri's night with this mix. A quick search on iTunes a few days ago produced some voice drops from the famous Apollo 11, 15 and 17 missions which I've added to the background just for fun. And I was lucky to get the gorgeous Yuri's Night artwork you're looking at just in time for the release of this mix from our friend, Alex von Wolff. Thanks to everyone who came out to help us celebrate Yuri's Night. And a big thank you to our our hosts at the Academy of Sciences for providing a fantastic backdrop for another great party. - Zach Track List

Earlier this week our pal Elite Force, recently dubbed the world’s Top Breakbeat producer by Breakspoll, had this to say about the state of the genre, “It's been a year when Breaks has bounced back. There have been far too many people bashing it as a genre and deriding it, but last year it was strong, and this year it will be stronger as more new talent is nurtured and they hone their skills, and as more of the old guard of refuseniks return to the fold.” Of course this is music to the ears of those of us in the Cowboy clan who love the broken beat. And it’s only appropriate that we echo Shack’s sentiments this week by featuring an up-and-coming talent in the world of breakbeat, the Dublic twins (a.k.a. Gergely and Gábor Tóth) from Budapest. Thanks to the modern miracles of Facebook and SoundCloud our man on the ground, Zach Moore, became pen pals with one half of Dublic, Gábor, several months ago and this week we're happy to be welcoming the twins to the RIPEcast. As you'll soon appreciate from this bangin', 58-minute RIPEcast exclusive mix, Dublic play a wide range of new wave Breaks, Electro, Dubstep and House with a hip-hop and funk flavor. They're known for their greasy re-edits and re-rubs (of which there are no less than eight in this mix!) and their hugely-popular mix series entitled ‘Next Episode’, which is dedicated to introducing the freshest trends in the underground electronic music scene (all three volumes of the 'Next Episode' series are available for free at Dublic's SoundCloud page: www.soundcloud.com/dublic). And along with fellow DJ/producer Wondawulf, the Dublic twins throw one of the hottest underground parties in Hungary, 'FutureMusic', which brings the newest styles and trends in dance music to Budapest. Gergely and Gábor started spinning only five years ago and an even more-recent foray into the studio has produced dozens of tight re-edits and re-rubs which have already found their way into the sets of some of the biggest names in the international scene including our friend and Breakspoll's top Breaks DJ, Krafty Kuts, Lady Waks, KouncilHouse and the legendary Hungarian DJ, Palotai, among others. And be on the look out for a series of Dublic originals in the very near future, which are sure to be just as good as their re-rubs! Many thanks to Dublic from The Space Cowboys for taking the time to put together this fantastic RIPEcast exclusive mix! Enjoy Boys and Girls! Track List

February 27, 2011 08:31 AM PST
The Space Cowboys are pleased to welcome our good friends, DJ/producer husband and wife, Big Fat Frog & Melyss [Homebreakin Records] to the RIPEcast this week. For their appearance on the show, Craig and Melyss have thrown together this delicious RIPEcast exclusive mix of their signature discofunk sound which includes several shout-outs from the adorable MC Stellar. Enjoy Boys and Girls! Melyss has been throwing down the funky house and breaks since 2000. Over the past 9 years she’s shared the stage with the likes of Meat Katie, Rogue Element, Stanton Warriors, Rennie Pilgrem, Adam Freeland and the list goes on. She is a resident with San Francisco crews Sister SF & Opel Productions and previously held a Tuesday residency for 4.5 years with the Mayonnaise crew in SF. Melyss is currently working on the production side of things - taking a bit of a step back from the DJ scene to get up to snuff in the studio. Craig O’Neill (a.k.a. Big Fat Frog) has been DJing since his teens growing up in Birmingham, UK and has been producing for well over ten years. Upon moving to the states from the UK, Craig DJed professionally for 4 years in Aspen, CO where his sound evolved from Funky House to Disco. He now resides in San Francisco and has recently released the mix Friday Night Tats consisting of original disco tracks remixed by the Disco King himself Big Fat Frog. Track List

BoC, try as they might, the forces of nature have met their match. The spirit and soul of SF's underground are not to be vanquished. And every year its strength and numbers increase. It's the bartenders, the promoters, the bouncers, the ticket takers, the folks who deliver the portaloo's, the sound guys, the photographers, and most importantly, the party people who make BoC an unstoppable, magical force on earth. And what do we do with all of this power? We party our fool heads off, that's what. - rrrus Track List

January 27, 2011 09:57 PM PST
"Ever since I was asked to play in San Francisco for the first time 4 years ago (where does the time fly???) I knew there was something really special about this city." "I have tried to describe it to people who have not been there to play or even just to visit, but it's impossible. It's everything that makes San Francisco a unique place: the legacy of hippy culture, the architecture, the hills, the bay, the fact that some of my favourite music comes from there (yes I am a Primus fan), but most of all the people, their generosity and hospitality, their love of good music, and their absolute dedication to making every single party a memorable occasion." "So, I've been lucky enough to play at Lovefest twice, and at Mighty 3 times (one of the venues with the best soundsystems EVER).And when my "penpal" Zach Moore asked me to play at his 40th birthday celebration (through my good friend and promoter extraordinaire Andrea) - I was absolutely thrilled to come back. Once again it was a crazy, sweaty, memorable party - and to top it all off I spent a whole 10 days soaking up the California sun and enjoying the vibes - catching up with the amazing friends I have made over my numerous visits and having loads of fun!!" "I hope that when you listen to this set you'll be able to feel the energy of that night…it will definitely stay in my memory for a long time! With lots of love to Zach, Andrea, Piper, all the other DJs on the night and my great pals in San Francisco (and a special mention to Nicole and Jason who always provide me with a home away from home - and to new dad Murph!)." "In the words of good old Arnie…I'LL BE BACK!" - Plaza de Funk Track List
Plaza is busier that ever with a barrage of material & remixes to come out on Distinctive, MOFO, Dusted Breaks (Best New Label Breakspoll '10), Rogue Industries & Royal One and some very special dates booked in across Europe. www.facebook.com/plazadefunk

January 24, 2011 07:31 PM PST
This mix hits with a swarm of booty, old school, funky hip hop remixes, electro house, hard breaks and drum and bass. A Cubpaw to the jugular. Enjoy party people! B.O.C. was quite an undertaking by our crew this year. A block party is not an easy thing to pull off, especially when the event starts at 6am on New Years Day. Can I also mention, that about a thousand people are waiting in 30 degree rainy weather to get into Club Mighty. Silent Disco was available outside under a big tent with 5 bars and plenty of headphones to cover cold ears. I covered a fun shift with Jenee handing out headphones from 8am-10am. I then walked around looking for needles (unsuccessful) before hitting a wall of people inside Mighty. Set time was 11am so, I lifted bag above head and wiggled my way up to Zach Moore rocking things. My long sleeve shirt was soaked from sweat before I even got on stage. The turntables were missing needles and I decided to play dusty cd's from Burningman. Those were some great tracks but not what I worked on. This is what shoulda happened....... Tracklist:

"Halloween has always been my favorite holiday. It brings out sides of people you don't get to see everyday -- creative sides, dark sides, funny sides, and -- based on some of the costumes I saw at Ghost Ship -- a lot of you folks have extremely slutty sides, too. My set this year includes a little something from each of those categories. So, in addition to some big dancefloor movers, I made sure to throw in some mashups and re-edited tricks and treats as well. Boo bitches!" - 8Ball Here's the track list:

For GhostShip 2010 I was extremely pleased to get the closing 3-4 AM slot inside the GhostShip. An honored slot to play if ever I've played one. I brought lots of ammo for this one. And after spending most of the year branching my sound out and playing more mid-tempo breaks and funk, I came back to my beloved electro for this gig. It's sixty minutes of big-room, peak-hour electro. Enjoy. 01. Herve - Together

The Space Cowboys are happy to bring you this very special, holiday edition of The RIPEcast courtesy of our good friends Slyde [slybeats.com, Fingerlickin]. Featuring their forthcoming release, "Russian Girls Are Dangerous" this delectable, 30-minute RIPEcast-exclusive mix is sure to keep you movin' through those long lines at the airport this weekend, Boys and Girls. Safe Travels and Happy Thanksgiving from The Space Cowboys, Everyone! Track List
Check out Slyde on their new website www.slybeats.com! Slyde have been gracing the breaks scene with their unique style of layered beats for almost a decade. 12Tree initially engineered Laidback’s ‘Frequency Delinquency’, with the latter’s belief that “rave is early break beat speeded up” running through its veins. The pair’s infatuation with funky, phat and well-produced breaks ensured they gelled perfectly and the album saw spectacular success winning Amazon’s Electronic Album of the Year in 2002. Following various accomplishments with the breaks arm of the label Bolshi, the duo were reborn as Slyde. Under the new name and with a new home at Finger Lickin’, Slyde has seen incredible singles success with the outrageously funky Slippedy Slide and addictively infectious Krunk. Their last four releases under Finger Lickin’ sold over 15,000 records and every Slyde single has reached the Top Five of DJ Magazine’s Beats Chart as well as receiving extensive radio play on renowned stations such as XFM and Radio 1. After a chance introduction to Keith Flint of The Prodigy who immediately recognized their talent, the trio collaborated on Clever Brains Fryin’. The duo have performed around the globe and back again at the very best clubs and festivals in all four corners of the world. They have started proceedings at Glastonbury for Annie Nightingale’s show on Radio 1, toured Australia, Asia and Canada, played slamming shows at Glade and fundraising parties in San Francisco for Burning Man and have rocked the floor at the world famous Womb Club in Tokoyo. Wherever Slyde perform, it is guaranteed they will smash up the dance floor. Slyde’s discerning conception of break beats has resulted in the album ‘Everyone’s entitled to our Opinion’ that both reflects their core influences and origins and strikes with a sophisticated depth of sound, crossing breaks with melodic tunes and commercial awareness. The album featured a whole host of vocalists as the duo didn’t just want make breaks tunes that are easy to mix in a club, but wanted people to feel the lyrics and hear the songs. Today, Slyde are bosses of their own, already successful label, ‘Slybeats’. Ripping through the city's underground like a cybertronic chainsaw and surrounded by urban grooves and industrial beats, Slybeats is set to dominate the musical landscape, flooding the dark streets with the laser lit sounds of the future. This week The Space Cowboys are pleased to pass along this special Halloween treat, a RIPEcast exclusive mix from our good pal Krafty Kuts! Enjoy, Boys and Girls! Martin Reeves, a.k.a. Krafty Kuts, is without a doubt one of the world’s greatest DJs. Lauded in the UK, worshipped in Australia, acclaimed in America, where ever he plays he is guaranteed to cause a commotion with his riotous skills. So far in a glittering career he has gained dance music’s top accolades including Best International DJ at the Australian Dance Music Awards, Breakspoll’s Face of Breaks 2003 and Best Breaks DJ at the M8 Ibiza awards 2006, in only his first year as a resident on the white isle. A stunning haul at Breakspoll 2007 saw him claiming Best Album for his debut long player ‘Freakshow’, Best DJ for a record third consecutive year and to cap it off, the richly deserved Outstanding Contribution to Breakbeat award that acknowledged his long journey to the acme of club culture. Inspired by the hip-hop and electro sounds that were rocking his world, Martin first stepped behind a pair of decks when he entered a DJ competition and incredibly, as a complete novice, he made it all the way to the final. With his love affair for the wheels of steel well and truly cemented, Krafty Kuts set about learning his art, perfecting the cutting and scratching that was to become the core of his DJ sets. Immersing himself in the music he loved, Martin went on to run one of Brighton’s most popular record shops throughout the 90s. Building an encyclopedic knowledge of dance music in all its forms, Krafty’s expertise marked him out as a prime supplier of dance-floor bullets to Brighton’s musical elite, including the town’s most famous son Norman Cook. Having built a fearsome DJing reputation for himself across the south-coast, with a string of high-octane gigs it was during 1996 that Martin took the next logical step, transferring his dance-floor knowledge to the studio, creating his own tracks to take his sets to the next level. His first big break came when a dubplate of Krafty Kuts’ ‘Gimme The Funk’ found its way to Norman Cook who immediately snapped it up for his Southern Fried label, releasing it to huge club approval. Suitably impressed Ministry of Sound offshoot FSUK took on Krafty unleashing a string of classic singles; ‘Funky Elements’, ‘Wild In the Aisles’ (a tribute to Martin’s legendary appearance on Supermarket Sweep!) and ‘Return of the Elements’. With his own tracks elevating his profile across the globe Martin mixed his first compilation ‘Slam On The Breaks’ which gathered the cream of the breaks scene into a mercurial mix, further enhancing his notoriety as a devastating deck technician and selling by the bucket-load. At about the same time, Krafty hooked up with Skool of Thought to establish the SuperCharged club night. Home to his longest standing residency, the night continues to pull in huge crowds and after 8 years of all encompassing party action on a Wednesday night, it is now one of Breakbeat’s most globally revered nights. With the club world at his mercy the demand for Krafty’s studio abilities reached new heights. Becoming the remixer du jour, Krafty transformed numerous tracks in to serious party bangers for the likes of Jurassic 5, Arthur Baker, Eric B & Rakim, Stakker Humanoid and Afrika Bambaataa’s Funky Heroes’, for which he won a Best Remix award. By 1999, with his all-encompassing club style, blending beats and breaks across the board, honed to perfection, Martin entered the studio with Freddy Fresh, long standing studio partner Ed Solo and NY’s own Dr Luke. Together they produced a series of beats and skits that were destined to become the backbone of Finger Lickin’s legendary Finger Lickin Funk release. The following two years saw Martin’s star rise still further, creating music for a Coca Cola advert, PlayStation 2 and Guy Richie’s ‘Mean Machine’ as well as mixing one of Mixmag’s most popular cover mount CDs. With DJing and music making taking up all of his time, Krafty decided it was time to leave music sales behind and left the record shop that had proved pivotal in his early career. Free to concentrate fully on his creative side Martin launched both the Against The Grain and SuperCharged labels with club partner Skool of Thought and began releasing a series of smart-bombs that would hake the foundations of the Breaks scene. The ‘Lost Plates EP’, ‘Lock The Hype’ and ‘Sound Check’ proved beyond any doubt that Krafty Kuts was now established as a force to be reckoned with in dance music. Track List

It was late August, and I was a sad Trav. I was sad thinking about all my friends going to Burning Man who would be subjected to bowel-wobbling bass. I was worried that the Root Society sound system would emit the brown note, thus causing my friends to soil their American-flag speedos. I thought, "if I can just fill their soul with a little soul, that may help improve their continence!" In response to the sadness, I decided to pull together some of my favorite 'Lovely Day' disco tracks and create a mix for my friends to help pass the time during the long drive to Burning Man. The mix is filled with soul and disco influences from the 70's and 80's and represents some of today's best Nu Disco edit artists. It is paired best with a sunny day in the park, Belgian beer in hand. Track List

After a successful five years, he put Fused and Bruised on the backburner to concentrate on production work, and following several years with Whole9Yards and Moonshine he became a mainstay recording artist for AdriftRecordings (formally known as Kingsize Records) before moving on to set up hisown hugely successful U&A imprint. Often credited for being a lynchpin in the developing the tech-funk genre (an amalgamation of breaks, house, techno and electro) he has released a series of highly successful singles in the past few years, finding broad support from DJs and musicians across the board, including the likes of James Zabiela, Sasha, Crystal Method, Laurent Garnier and Fatboy Slim to name but five. In 2008 released a semi-retrospective double album’s worth of remixes and re-workings of a 12-year back catalogue, with over 25 mixes coming from such luminaries as Miles Dyson, Rogue Element, Deepgroove, Dylan Rhymes & Calvertron. In addition to these solo singles, Meat Katie has been a regular collaborator with Elite Force, a relationship that had begun in 2003 with the massive-selling 'Toba', and that will see their creative relationship come to fruition in 2009 with the launch of their new joint project under the name ‘Dustbowl’, as well as a series of singles under the ‘Meat Katie & Elite Force’ banner. As a remixer, Elite Force has always been in huge demand, with re-workings for the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Crystal Method, Jungle Brothers, Stereo MCs, UNKLE, Infusion, Rennie Pilgrem, Shiloh and Dylan Rhymes all contributing to his reputation as one of the most creative and effective remixers around. Elite Force's music has also been the soundtrack to many a movie, with a huge list of impressive A-list credits to his name, including the likes of the Matrix, Charlie's Angels, Arlington Road, Mortal Kombat, Crow, The Bone Collector, The Jackyll, Spiderman 2 and his music has appeared on a wide array of TV shows, from CSI to Top Gear, from Football Focus to LA Doctors. He's also soundtracked a number of computer games, including no fewer than 5 FIFA games, several of the Wipeout series, The Matrix and Motorstorm 1, and he is currently writing some bespoke music for forthcoming games for Ferrari and Motorstorm2. On the decks, Elite Force has been a prime mover since 1990 when he cut his teeth playing huge student nights and self-promoted acid house nights in the South West of England, before moving up to ....London.... and ultimately gravitating towards his tech-funk style, with which he now has a full diary of global bookings. He has become known as one of the top technicians on a circuit that has included massive shows in Belarus, Hungary, Australia, Italy, USA, Czech Republic, India, Turkey, Spain, Japan, Georgia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and China, amongst others, as well as numerous festival slots including Glastonbury, Coachella, Bloom, Wickerman, the Glade and more recently Burning Man. He was also responsible for the hugely influential Strongarm Sessions webcasts which became something of an institution since their inception back in 2001, receiving as they did around 20,000 downloads per show, but now put on the backburner to concentrate on other projects, such as his own blog (Techfunkmanifesto) and his other musical projects, such as Dustbowl (with Meat Katie). This mix is, among other things, a mark of the season, an ongoing fight for honesty, a need, a desire, a campfire, a peripheral vision, balance that isn’t a compromise, a thin blanket of snow, a tribute to Christopher Alexander, a dream seeking words, a roll across the shoulders, an acceptance of the unknown process, and a brush against the edges. - benchun Track List

August 03, 2010 12:07 PM PDT
I've taken roughly 13 months since I first started compiling tracks working away on Volume II of "My Definition of Chill." Like a squirrel storing nuts for the winter I would find some tracks and add them to the project and forget about it for awhile. A couple months go past and I forage a few more. Well, it's ready now. Putting together dance mixes is a relatively straightforward process for me. A chill mix is a different beast entirely. I'm going to be honest and tell you most chill mixes bore the hell out of me. Maybe that's just me not searching out wide and far enough to find music that entertains me. Either way, in putting together this mix, I logged many many hours in compiling, editing, and mixing it together. Along the way I was able to mix in some of my all time favorite songs by favorite artists of mine (Ulrich Schnauss and Underworld) along with some new classics (Phoenix, LCD Soundsystem), some covers (Toto, Walk on the Wild Side) and hidden gems. I hope you, dear listener, enjoy the toils of my labor. - Deckard P.S. Only Part 2 is being featured on the Gough St. Sessions at this time. There is something very magical about the new California Academy of Sciences Museum in San Francisco. Maybe it’s the unique green architecture, or the flow of the interior design, or the unique exhibits that peak your curiosity, or maybe it’s the penguins. Either way…when you take all of those elements and combine them with the weekly Nightlife event and the ruckus force of the San Francisco Space Cowboys, something good is bound to happen. For my opening set of the night, I wanted to play some deep funky tracks for people as they were making their way through the museum. The tracks in this set are a mix of new and old, many of which I rarely get to play out. Hope you enjoy! - Brad

Yes. We know. You're supposed to wait until Cinco de Mayo to throw your Cinco de Mayo party. But this year it fell on a Wednesday and we really wanted to maximize attendance because our little soiree was a fundraiser for the construction of the Burning Man Temple. So we settled on the Saturday before (May 1st, hence "Uno de Mayo") which turned out to be a small stroke of genius because the venue, Mission Rock, was absolutely packed with cowboys and cowgirls dancing and riding the mechanical bull we brought in for the occasion. And with the way we Space Cowboys tend to put away our booze it certainly didn't hurt to have a Sunday to recover. This mix is a live recording of my opening set from the main room that evening. I knew I had the big bats (MurphStar & 8Ball) on deck and didn't need to play too hard. My goal was to keep the mood fun and lite so this mix is loaded with lots of funky breaks and happy vocals, like Plaza de Funk's "Push 'n Pull" (a track that both Murph and 8Ball are rather fond of). If you were at Uno de Mayo paryting with us then the next time you see 'em, make sure you tip your ten gallons to fellow Cowboys Shissla and PK for putting together a fantasic party for a great cause. Well done, Boys! Track List

This week The Space Cowboys are as pleased to bring you this very special treat from one of our all-time favorite DJ/Producers and good friend, Plaza de Funk! This bangin' 55-minute breakbeat masterpiece, featuring several Plaza de Funk exclusives, is available only through THE SPACE COWBOYS RIPEcast. Come get it while it's hot, Cowpokes! Track List
Thank you to Plaza de Funk from The Space Cowboys for this killa mix! Plaza de Funk (www.myspace.com/plazadefunk) has been producing and DJing since 2001. After a few formative years spent dabbling with production and releasing records on labels such as Oxyd in his native country Italy, he moved to London in early 2004 and almost immediately got signed to West Records (best breakthrough label at Breakspoll 2005, and nominated as best label at Breakspoll 2006). The deal lead to the release of the Got The Funk Ep in 2005, which included a remix from Madox and was a massive hit, with support from all major players across the board. The remix also received a nomination for best remix at Breakspoll 2006, and was included in the Beatz and Bobz compilation mixed by Jds. The single was followed by the Back Home Ep on Mantra Breaks, again one of the most prominent breakbeat labels in the world, voted best label at Breakspoll 2007. After these two releases Plaza started working on a string of remixes all through 2006 and 2007, re-tweaking Dj Killer on Functional, Flore on IbreaksFunk, The Drum Monkeys on Westway, MI Loki on Tricksta, and doing a split remix Ep with the Groove Diggerz for Ape records. His remix of The Drum Monkeys’ Batty Batucada made even Fatboy Slim take notice, so much that he called Westway personally to get his hands on a copy of the vinyl! While his remix of Dj Killer’s Acid – released on Functional – has recently been included by General Midi on the latest instalment of the much respected Y4K series on Distinctive. Even with all this remix activity, Plaza has still found time to come up with some original tunes, releasing Get On Down on West records in early 2007. Press support has been high, with the new West single and the Flore remix being given the 5-star treatment in I-dj mag, the Got The Funk and Back Home Ep’s both voted sureplayers in Dj Mag, and the Drum Monkeys remix being chosen as dancefloor destroyer in the aforementioned Dj Mag. Djing has also picked up hugely between 2006 and 2007, and has seen Plaza performing at Breakspoll at Fabric in February, playing two of the Uk’s biggest festivals – namely Glastonbury and Glade – while also jetting around to play in the States, France, Italy, Spain and some of the most respected clubnights in the Uk. There have been a lot more releases between the second half of 2007 and the beginning of 2008, namely the remix of Zimbardo "Say Hey" on Ruff Dog, the remix of Break The Box "Groovy Moves" on Ground Level, the remix of the Beat Assassins "Generation MTV" on Mofo and a new original, "Ghetto Groove/Beatdown" on Brighton Breaks. In February 2008, Plaza De Funk was invited to play Breakspoll for the second time in a row and was nominated in two categories - best breakthrough dj and best breakthrough producer. He won the award for Best Breakthrough Dj and is currently busy gigging throughout the world. Highlights of 2009 so far include another performance at Breakspoll, 2 tours in the States and the first tour of Australia. Add to this the fact that Do It - a tune that was originally written for a charity complitation project - has just been selected by the Plump Dj's for inclusion in their massive new Global Underground mix cd, and you'll see why the future looks bright! I'm one of just a few idiots who've been with The Space Cowboys since the beginning, and that includes the first Breakfast of Champions party back in the olden days. For the most part, all the parties blur together for me, but that's nice in a way because it feels like all the highlights are from one big epic event. This last BoC was the 10th anniversary, and that meant it was an important landmark for me -- it meant that I've officially been doing this shit way too fucking long. I won't lie, I've talked about retiring my headphones several times over the last couple years, but then one of our big events rolls around, like BoC, and I think to myself, "Retire from this? You're fucking nuts!" My usual M.O. is to bring a bunch of music and then just play to the party's vibe. But for BoC I knew I'd be playing early, before outside was open. There's no such thing as a warm up set at BoC. As Kapt'n Kirk put it, "People who show up early expect to have their asses handed to them from the very beginning." So I knew I had to come in with a crushing set (I crush you!). I also wanted to come in with a bunch of different styles, and even different tempos. I'm kinda ADD (as if you hadn't noticed), and when I play I like to run through different themes and flavors, and in this case that meant pulling in rock, hip hop, classic rave, and some funny shit Henry Rollins said that makes me laugh every time I hear it (see: track 17 - AC Slater's Play The Record Again). - 8Ball Track List

I got to BOC at 8 AM, having already been awake for 24-hours producing Sea of Dreams, and playing a 3-hour set there in Silent Disco. The plan was to drop gear, then head home for a nap as my set was at 6pm. As the day wound on I realized that going home would be the end of me, so I figured I should tough it out. Besides, after wanting to play this party for so long, maybe this was simply the final flaming hoop Id have to jump through to earn the right. Right? Better said than done. The day wore on. Good conversation, some dance, a burger, a bloody, my throat growing raspier and more sore. Id look at my watch and it would mock me by saying “11:30” or “1:15” . By 2pm I couldn’t even talk anymore and was relegated to “that guy who whispers in everyone’s ears at parties”. Somewhere along the way I realized I didn’t have Serato Cds, a potentially devastating development if I couldn’t find some blanks. Thankfully, Kramer HAD blanks which I paid for by promptly spilling his full beer all over him. Now I’m THAT GUY too. At 4 Clarkie went on and sprayed flaming gasoline on the crowd while I nervously burned my Cds behind him. At 5, Aaron Pope went on and reminded us why he’s one of the finest dance-music Djs in the Bay Area... Just an outstanding set, energetic, funky, yet progressive-enough for the tweakers. A VERY hard act to follow. By this point, I’m going on 36 hours or so so its basically adrenaline and redbull. I figured my go-to thematic funk/rock remix stuff would be too tough a transition from Pope so I stayed with the more beat-centric stuff earlier, then downshifted into the chunky later as it got darker. It seemed to work really well. To my surprise, the techier stuff was less effective than anything with a rap or a hook (my go-to territory anyway). When I downshifted into the funky stuff (“Earthlings” and “Jungle Jam”) and my own edits, the crowd really just erupted. It seemed like folks were about ready to rock out, so we went there. Towards the end, the security told me I had 10 minutes, so I dropped the tempo and went into a few midtempo bangers with the idea that Id close out with “Whistlers Delight” which ends on Monty Python’s “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”. As it turned out, 3 minutes into this Andrea got them to give us another hour and I upshifted into Neighbour’s “Superstition” so that 8Ball and Zach Moore could take it home. All in all I couldn’t have been more thankful of the opportunity to play for most of everyone I love at one of my favorite all-time get downs. - MoPo Track List

Breakfast of Champions is my happy place. It’s where I was first introduced to what sure seemed like my long, lost friends. The kind of people that were not out looking for the good time, they made the good time happen. It wasn’t an over-hyped, over-priced, over-too-early club night...this was real fun for ten dollars and it’s not going to end until you cry “Uncle”! Holy f***. Ten years of Breakfast of Champions! The most amazing dancing institution of SF. This was my 7th to DJ. An honor, a privilege, and what a motherf***ing blow out! I came to BOC 2010 ready to play the mid-tempo breaky funk, but stepping up to the tables while a Brad Robinson dance floor was in full effect forced more desperate measures. 2009 was a very interesting year for me. It had many ups and downs. The downs, well, they're better not to rehash. But the ups, they are some of the best I've ever had. Most notable are the new friendships I've forged with so many people, the culmination of which came on New Year's Day 2010. This was my first year of being asked to play at Breakfast of Champions and it was truly a pleasure to hang with the Cowboys and help create the soundscape entering the new decade. This is a re-recording of the set I played at BOC (due to technical difficulties). You all seemed to love it then, now you can love it again! Have a great 2010. - Kramer Track List

Who knows how to throw a party better than The Space Cowboys? If you have ever been to Breakfast Of Champions then you know the answer to that question is NOBODY! Over the past 10 years, the Cowboys have established BOC as a San Francisco institution. I am always honored by the opportunity to play for the Space Cowboys but BOC has a special place in my heart. The crowds at BOC are unlike any other. Geared up and keen to throw down until someone cries "uncle". It was a special treat to play an outside set at the new venue for BOC 2010. We Deep Enders have been long time friends of the Cowboys. Particularly in recent years, many of our respective BM crews have gotten more and more close and intermingled..almost becoming one group between us, and I appreciate the Cowboys folding me and my peeps into their brilliance for this most ultimate of party days. Mad mutual respect! So here it is 2010. As I look back on the last decade, one thing that was constant was I always looked forward to spending my New Years with my SF friends. And the last several years has meant really one thing - you see everyone in the world you know (or want to know) at BOC. The interesting thing is that the last couple of years, there has been a growing number of us that have not even gone out for NYE. That NYE has become NYD. And that is NOT NYD watching football like I used to in Texas. That is NYD watching the most creative and bizarre individuals frolic and make light of the world and have an amazing time. I've now had the pleasure of being able to play at BOC a few times, but I've always played in the afternoon. And I must say, playing in the afternoon of BOC is awesome because everyone has had 24 hours of partying to get really riled up for my set. And I love it. I'm going to make a motion to change the name next year to DOC or Day of Champions - because it's Not Just For Breakfast Anymore. I was extremely excited to be playing outside this year - which folds in very fondly with my roots to The Deep End and our outdoor parties that I would craft sets for all year. My favorite sets ever will always be playing to a packed house at The Deep End, but a close second would be at BOC. I was playing at 4pm this year and following my main man Murphstar - who I knew would rock it and have everyone in a smiling happy mood - so I had to continue in on that vain. I tried to pick out tracks that flowed in a way to give fist-pumping energy moving forward and to create the kind of upbeat vibe we needed to not only sustain us from a long day/night of partying - but to keep it going throughout the New Year. Thank you to all that danced your heart out and gave me those smiles while we all jumped and jiggled. And thanks for accepting me in my skimpy scout outfit; though many of you did tell me how disturbed you were looking at me. It was an epic day. I hope you enjoy the music moving forward too - I'm very happy with this mix, and it is a very good reflection of the funky stuff I'm playing these days. Peace, Love and Beats - Clarkie Track List

I arrived in San Fran on the 30th to stay with fellow Cowboy Murphstar and spent the following day rummaging through my tunes. The brief – New year, funky, breakbeat, party, classics, Finger Lickin’- the result is what you have for your sonic delight. I started with an unusual jungle tune ‘Strange Things’ from Count Sinden that got mashed up with some happy new year toasting from the infamous Ragga Twins and then smashed into Deekline’s booty of ‘Outer Space’, a tried and tested classic that set the party mood. I was trying to get the Cowboys to open the dark curtains because it all seemed too night time for a day time party but the ravers just weren’t having it! The curtains remained firmly drawn and the aural assault was underway. Elite Force’s outstanding burning man anthem of Deadmau5 was next to destroy, followed by DJ Fixx’s ‘Shake it’. One of my favourite house producers of recent years is Miles Dyson his ‘Outro’ track always delivers with a mighty punch with its classical strings and devastating bass line. Next up was a cheeky bootleg of Alan Braxe’s ‘Intro’. See what I did there - ‘Outro’ then ‘Intro’ (!!); following this a monster rerub from Krafty Kuts called ‘Funk Nasty’ featuring Grandma Funk. Then one of my faves of 2009, the awesome South Rakkas Crew, ragga overload and remixed by the mighty talent of Fake Blood – a marching anthem of epic proportions, a tune that is neither breaks nor house but commands all crew to unite. No set would be complete without a Plump DJs tune, their ‘I’ll Be Good’ always vibes up the room, as does Finger Lickin’s remix of the year...Rising star Peo De Pitte delivered an incredible take on the Drumattic Twins ‘Crazy Love’ which was followed by a cheeky mash up booty that I was given in the Ukraine at an incredible festival on a beach by Russian superstar dj Lady Waks. It mashes up her ‘Minimal’ tune with Crookers and Salt & Pepper’s ‘Push It’ one of the biggest tunes of 2009. Stop for breath. No! Slyde’s ‘Slippedy Starter’ gave a nod to the old school Finger Lickin’ days then Control Z’s remix of a Dylan Rhymes tune took the roof off bringing the set back to the pure breaks orgy. Dub Step has taken over in 2009 and to be honest it doesn’t rock my boat too much, however when Shack of Elite Force hijacked TC’s ‘Where’s my Money’ the result was a deadly dancey and hard hitting melange that has become a main stay in recent sets. Then a classic from the Finger Lickin’ vaults ‘The Push’ by the Plumps, another awesome Fake Blood production ‘The Dozens’ and then as any superstar dj should, I did...I ended with the outstanding 2 Many DJs remix of Chems ‘Superstar DJs’. What can I say, San Francisco has something unique. An up for it, musically educated, warm, super friendly and crazy bunch of nutters. Truly an incredible honour to be a part of – Huge respect to everyone who came and heard the set and to the Space Cowboys I raise my glass. Have a great 2010 and see y’all soon. - Justin Rushmore. A very special thanks from the Space Cowboys to Justin for the wicked set!

This year’s Breakfast of Champions was an epic 10-year anniversary to a party that began as a simple gathering of friends in 2000. We celebrated with a new venue, Kelly's Mission Rock, which was a great space for this daytime party despite the bathroom issues. I had a great time rocking out with our Space Cowboy friends and family. I wanted my set to include some new tracks with a mix of some of the great classic house records that I enjoyed playing over the past 10 years of BOC. Thanks to everyone who rocked out with me on the dance floor and I hope that you enjoy this set. Here's to the beginning of a great new year of dancing. - Brad Robinson Track List

My original plan was to drop a proper breakz set because it’s BREAKfast after all. I stepped into a sea of people, it was like alphabet soup from wall-to-wall. The floor was full of eclectic energy so I decided to pull some new sound with some of my favorite classics, which ultimately fused into an electro-break-dub-hop extravaganza. The floor was flying with lovely phreekz and I had the time of my life. THANK YOU, Space Cowboys for inviting me to perform at the legendary Breakfast of Champions! - Jive Track List

After a one-year hiatus, I was really stoked to be back in the BOC lineup this year. In the past when I've played this party, what I remember most is a sea of friendly faces on the floor, and meeting lots of people who really appreciate good music. This year was no different: a great party with an unbeatable vibe. I had a later set this year, so I played the "stay sober" game the whole day by dancing my ass off and hanging with friends. There was incredible music everywhere - props to ALL the DJs. When I went on at 5pm it was really flattering to see how many friends had stayed for my set, and I was really fired-up to drop some a high-energy music. This recording is a mix of house, electro and breaks, with some original songs from my partner Chad and I, and another original called Rat Tat Tat Tat that I think works pretty well on the dance floor. Hopefully you all enjoy the music and happy 2010! - Aaron Pope Track List

In more ways than one the 2010 renewal of Breakfast of Champions was very special for me. I made my DJ debut with The Space Cowboys after three fruitful and rewarding years with my good friends at The Deep End. Like the other 3,000 plus who packed Kelly’s Mission Rock, I indulged in the magical vibe and world-class debauchery that make BoC the greatest party of the year in San Francisco. And the whole experience was further-enriched by the fact that many of the people who helped make that day possible for me as a DJ, either through their years of support and encouragement (Piper, Darren, Sh00ey, Bali to name a few) or their influence in our community (Andrea, Clarkie, Kramer , Aaron Pope, PK to name a few more), were there celebrating the New Year along with me. I played at 11:00 AM (Red Stripe in hand) under an overcast sky in the cool mist of the back patio. I also had the good fortune of following Seismic’s Trav, who masterfully transformed the damp chill of the patio into a frenzied sea of bobbing heads and smiling faces with a gorgeous opening set. I had two goals in mind for my set: 1) It had to be funky and 2) I wanted the tracks to be accessible to as many BoC revelers as possible, which is why you’ll hear some pretty familiar tracks in this mix. I think I hit the mark on both counts, but I’ll let you be the judge of that. Enjoy this second helping of my live set from The Space Cowboys’ Breakfast of Champions party on New Year’s Day 2010. Finally, thank you from the bottom of my heart to my fellow Cowboys for finding a spot for me in our clan and to everyone who danced their asses off during my set that morning. Track List

I looooove playing B.O.C, and I love playing the opening set even more. The eager ears and feet surround you, waiting for you to give them a sweet release they've been waiting for. But for me it almost didn't happen this year! Do you remember your excitement as a child, waiting for the day when you would open your Christmas presents? Getting the email about your B.O.C. DJ spot is a close second. 34 DJs around San Francisco were foaming at the ears. We'd all been told we would play, but at what time? which room? Was I going to play a zipper-core set inside, orbig-gay-haus outside? The lineup came out on Dec 27th, and I didn't get a present. No slot for me -- how could this be? I poked Andrea Loinstar about not having a box to unwrap. "WTF! STFU! NO WAY! GTFO!" was the immediate response. Somehow in all the planning I'd fallen off the roster. Luckily in 5 minutes she made everything right again. The Cowboys decided to open up the outside an hour earlier and I would take theopener slot. I went from having no present at all to having the biggest one under the tree -- I love opening at B.O.C. This set perfectly captures the mood of my morning -- slowly breaking the crowd in with some beautiful melodic Deadmau5, ramping up with some soulful house and funky breaks, and finally peaking with some classic breakbeats from 2003. A hearty thank-you to Kevin Wardell for shedding his blood on the conga drums, to the dancers up front for getting the crowd all worked up, to Zach Moore for capturing it all & providing tech support (and beer!), and to the Space Cowboys for throwing the best party of the year. - Trav Track List

Breakfast of Champions is my favorite party of the year so it's always an honor to DJ at it. With 2009 being my first year as a Space Cowboy I'm hoping there are many more to follow. This year starting off the main room when the door opens I wanted to play both to those who were just starting their day and those who were going full force from the night before. I got a thrill out of playing a wide range of sounds at one of the biggest parties of the year. Happy New Year indeed! - Deckard Track List

RIPEcast artwork and PodOmatic page design by Jem Panfunik (www.jempanufnik.com) About The Space CowboysThe Space Cowboys are a San Francisco based collective that began its exploration of the cosmos long over a decade ago, as a diverse group of talented individuals who came together in the pursuit of the creation of unique entertainment events, mechanical contraptions and art projects. The group consists of members from all walks of life and vocations – engineers, event planners, programmers, massage therapists, designers, architects, nurses, video editors, electricians, teachers, producers, corporate executives, animators, and financial advisers. Cowboys reside not only in San Francisco, but in Oakland, Lake Tahoe, Hawaii, NYC & Brooklyn, LA & Santa Barbara, Sacramento, and even Laos. The collective serves as an outlet for the members and their friends and family to creatively and socially express themselves beyond their “day jobs”. Our story begins with wrangling good times in the wild west of Black Rock City. As one of the first large scale dance camps at Burning Man, the group essentially constructed and ran a nightclub for a week each year on the playa, providing free beats and beverages to all nightly. Continuing the legacy of a perennial Burning Man theme camp, the Cowboys have constructed a variety of other playa art projects as well. The collective is responsible for the creation of a mechanical horse, mechanical wagon train (the Beast) consisting of a chopped-down '63 Valiant with a welded steel superstructure and 4 tow-able wagon cars, SCTV versions 0-3 (various forms of video art structures including a fifty-foot wide video wall comprised of five CRT projectors and 5 acrylic screens measuring eight feet square supported by over 2 tons of steel), and a range of other art cars including a duck, horseshoe, turtle, two rockets and two ponies. In 2003, the Cowboys inherited Martha, a deconstructed Toyota minivan from their sister camp Space Lounge (now defunct). Martha has since been fully rebuilt and dutifully serves as a transport for the troops and a mobile lounge on the playa and off. Since 2001 the Space Cowboys are perhaps most well known for their UNIMOG All-Terrain Audio Visual Assault Vehicle (ATAVAV). Originally a 1973 Mercedes German Military vehicle, the Space Cowboy's UNIMOG was one of the world's first fully self-contained mobile sound systems, and perhaps still one of the largest off-road sound systems in the world, completely self-sufficient with lights, video projectors, screens, radio transmitters, on-board generators and a wireless network. The UNIMOG has gone where no other sound system has gone, from the desert of Black Rock, to the snow covered slopes at Squaw Valley and the urban canyons of San Francisco as a lead float in the city's LoveParade as well as countless street fairs, conventions, and BRAF supported art openings across the bay. To fund these activities the Space Cowboys have produced some serious fundraisers in San Francisco. The parties have become legendary events in their own right. Over the years the Space Cowboys have developed an international reputation for producing the finest underground events, including the annual Black Rock Hoe Down, Ghost Ship on Treasure Island, SCAM (Space Cowboy AM), Fresh @Shine, Snow Fest in Lake Tahoe and Breakfast of Champions; a party beginning at 6am on New Years Day, which has grown into an infamous block party attracting thousands after outgrowing several suitable venues in the city. In 2010 we began a weekly podcast called the Space Cowboys RIPEcast. Every week we share DJ sets that have either been created from live recordings (at our parties and events) or exclusive sets crafted specifically for the followers of our RIPEcast. For the past 18 months we've released a RIPEcast a week featuring the talent of our own roster of DJs. We also include guest mixes from FOC (friends of Cowboys) in San Francisco as well as internationally acclaimed DJs including: Krafty Kuts, Soul of Man, Plump DJs, Plaza de Funk, Myagi, Elite Force, Slyde and more. We are truly blessed to be able to share our passion of music with all of our friends and fans. No one but the greater community profits from the activities of the Space Cowboys. Each Cowboy pays yearly dues and any additional monies from fundraisers are used to create future art events and projects. For us it not about the money, but rather the creative expression, community, and something called a good time. We work hard so that we can play hard, and we play hard with our friends and family in the name of music, smiles and plenty of hugs. Followers
